China to Raise Awareness of Congenital Disability Prevention

The Department of Rehabilitation under the China Disabled Persons' Federation (CDPF) and the Department of Maternal and Child Health under the National Health Commission released a guidebook to help pregnant women avoid congenital defects in Beijing on August 20.

It was part of the activities of this year's Disability Prevention Day, which falls on August 25 every year. The State Council established it in 2017.

The guidebook covers the knowledge ranging from pregnancy to neonatal care and it is like a diary. It centers on the concerns of pregnant women and offers professional suggestions.

The CDPF will hand out 33,000 guidebooks to marriage registries, maternal and child health institutions and local communities, where women of childbearing age can get one for free.

Women can also keep a diary in the guidebook and collect their pregnancy examinations to ensure a healthy childbirth.

Meanwhile, the CDPF has joined hands with 16 departments to promote disability prevention across the country. More than 20 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions will organize activities for science popularization and free diagnosis and treatment.
